Why Your Mental Health is Important
Hello everyone! If you follow me on Instagram you know that a couple weeks back I mentioned started a little mental health column over on the blog. Well this marks my first post! I thought it would be best to take some time to talk about what mental health is & why it should matter to you.
In the coming blog posts related to mental health I look forward to diving in on various mental disorders, tips for how to cope with life’s stressors, my personal back ground with mental health related issues, & more. So definitely stay tuned for that!
What is mental health?
People talk about mental health all the time, but what does that really mean? Mental health is a bit broad, but it includes emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. Simply said, mental health affects how we feel, think, and act.
According to Medilexicon’s medical dictionary, mental health is:
“Emotional, behavioral, and social maturity or normality; the absence of a mental or behavioral disorder; a state of psychological well-being in which one has achieved a satisfactory integration of one’s instinctual drives acceptable to both oneself and one’s social milieu; an appropriate balance of love, work, and leisure pursuits.”
According to the WHO (World Health Organization), mental health is:
“… a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” The WHO stresses that mental health “is not just the absence of mental disorder.”
Why does it matter to you?
Mental health issues are very common; chances are you or someone you know has struggled with mental health disorders or issues at some point in their life. It is also important to note that struggling with mental health problems is not something that should be viewed negatively. Misconceptions about mental health are widespread, which is why awareness & education is so important.
I think learning about mental health is important for each individual person, because the more you know about how your mind works, the more you can enrich your own life. I am a huge believer in self-development & self-awareness. Since I have spent time learning about mental health issues & understanding more about how connected your psychological & psychical health are, my life has been impacted tremendously. Leading me to become a better version of myself on a daily basis.
